Alms & Legs

The Alms and Legs Ministry exists to lead Community Bible Church in identifying and meeting the urgent physical needs of those in our church family and community, desiring that CBC will be known as a people who serve a God of mercy and compassion.

A Cup of Water in Jesus' Name

by Rod Kelley

Jill called a church today because she needed help, and lots of it. She asked for money to buy some new tires to keep her family safe. She asked for food for her children since she does not qualify for food stamps. One of her daughters is in foster care, so Jill asked if someone could help her understand the legal process of getting her daughter returned. Jill has been unemployed for several months despite many attempts to find work. A GED certificate would qualify her for a better job, and again she asked if someone could help her with obtaining a GED.

God knows Jill and He loves Jill, and He wants Jill to become acquainted with His Son. God wants to use this pain in Jill's life for His good, so He providentially plants a church in Jill's community. The name of the church is Community Bible Church,  but it's really more of a philosophy than a name: community.

Jill is not a real person. Rather, she is a composite of the many needs that our Alms & Legs Ministry has been called upon to meet in our community. Because of your generosity and willingness to help others, we have been able to show the love of Christ in very practical ways in our community and schools. Would you like to be an eyewitness to God's next incredible act of mercy? Then come and join us on the A & L team! We have been waiting for you.

  • GED

Free GED classes are offered to CBC attenders and the community.  These classes are sponsored by Community Bible Church in conjunction with the Anderson One School District. To inquire about this program call 864.616.1203.

Those involved in this program include a certified teacher and several teacher assistants who help with teaching or testing responsibilities on a weekly basis.  The work with this ministry is very rewarding, gives many relational opportunities in addition to teaching opportunities, and requires only a 2-3 hour commitment per week.

GED Trivia: Did you know that 60% of high school graduates cannot pass the GED?  The GED is a hard test, and that is why classes to prepare for it are often essential to success.

  • Blessed Feet

Blessed Feet is a ministry of Alms & Legs that is promoted before the church just before the beginning of the school year.  Blessed Feet coordinates requests received from local school guidance counselors with church attenders who desire to be a blessing to students by purchasing a new pair of shoes or by donating money for shoes to be purchased by the ministry. Shoes are wrapped by the donor and given to schools for distribution to specific students in need.  School supplies are also donated and distributed to schools according to need.  See our table display in the foyer beginning late July for more information.

Fourteen pairs of shoes, along with new book bags, were given out this 20082009 school year to students attending Wren Elementary, Wren Middle, Wren High, Spearman, and Hunt Meadows Elementary schools.  Thanks to all who participated in this endeavor to be a blessing to those who may be among "the least of these."  For more information contact Cathy Huffman at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

  • in.DEED

In.deed is an Alms & Legs ministry designed to reach out to individuals or families in our church during times of medical illness, death, job loss, etc.  Encouragement is administered through visitation, phone calls, cards, coordination of needed services, occasional meals and prayer. We strongly encourage and utilize the involvement of CARE groups to help meet these needs. To find out how you or your CARE group can serve in this way or be available to help with various needs; or, if you have a need for the body of Christ to "come alongside" you, call 864.616.1203.

I John 3:17 (NIV) "If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?"

James 2:15-17 (NIV) "Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, 'Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,' but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead."

  • Grace Expectations

Grace Expectations coordinates individuals and CARE groups with assisting new moms and their families. A meal and any further care that may be needed upon return home from the hospital is provided.  To receive assistance or find out how you can help this team, contact Marleen at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
